Patrick Weblin - Genetics

Haling from the deep south of Ireland, Mood 24 Records is an imprint helmed by Cork-based DJ and producer Patrick Weblin specializing in the deeper end of house and techno. With previous releases on Tooltrax and Soraya, Patrick decided to branch out with his own label which has already turned a few heads and won over many DJs. This latest issue comes from Patrick himself featuring the track “Genetics.” The cut had been incubating for a while, with Patrick testing out versions in the clubs and gauging reactions before settling on the final version. “Genetics” features a punchy kick and crisp snare rhythm alongside lovely deep chord stabs which rise and fall through the track. A rolling bass riff adds a subtle funk and there’s an effectively dramatic breakdown which ends with a floor-pleasing bang. The first “Genetics” remix comes from QuestionmarQ, the Irish producer known for releases on Soma’s Darkroom Dubs, Gotta Keep Faith, and his own Vision Collective Recordings imprint. This version adds a bit of percussive flair, as well as a slamming bass sound, an emphasis on the vocal drop, and some Detroit-ish techno chord action. Nigel Nason, another producer from Cork, who released his debut EP on Mood 24 as well as a follow-up for All Over It Records, provides the final remix. He ends up ripping “Genetics” in half and whacking it a few times with a mallet before putting the pieces back together with his own special blend of house flavorings. Nigel’s version is raw, driving, and solidly focused on the dance floor. It’s got an after hours warehouse feel that should should appeal to DJs of many stripes. Great stuff here from Mood 24 Records … be sure to give this one a twirl.
